FLINT CEMETERY VETERANS’ GARDEN

WORTHINGTON, OH | SITE PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

In late 2007 POD Design was retained by the Cemetery Board of Trustees for a follow-up project at the Flint Cemetery to further refine the meditation garden envisioned during our master plan refinement process. Additionally the board had decided to develop a proper area dedicated to area Veterans and commissioned POD to develop concepts that would honor the service of local military personnel in a manner that was unique to Flint Cemetery.

Working with an advisory committee the POD team developed a series of sculptural concepts that sought to emulate the flag that our veterans have so proudly protected as a symbol of our freedoms. The final concept called for a customized bronze piece handcrafted to appear as a waving flag with five broad stripes and five emblems, each representing one of the military service branches. Known as the Flag of Honor, the sculpture is flanked by four stone Patriot Walls that offer a place to sit for quiet reflection. A dedication plaque, entry monument bearing the vision statement for the garden were also designed and fabricated in time for the Veterans Day 2008 dedication.
